Early Life and Education

Nathaniel Philip Victor James Rothschild, born on 12 July 1971 in Paddington, Greater London, is the youngest child and only son of Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, and Serena Rothschild (née Dunn). He has three sisters: Hannah, Beth Matilda, and Emily Magda (“Emmy”) .

He attended Colet Court and Eton College, later studying history at Wadham College, Oxford Rothschild Archive. In an interesting turn, he later earned an MSc in Addiction Studies from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London in 2013, reflecting a diverse academic path. In recognition of his ties to academia, he was elected as a Foundation Fellow of Wadham College in 2018.

Business Career & Roles

Nat Rothschild’s career reflects a wide-ranging involvement in international finance and industry:

  • He began as an alternate director at RIT Capital Partners plc in 2000 and served as a full non-executive director until 2010.

  • He chaired JNR Limited, focusing on investment advisory in emerging markets, mining, and resources.

  • He served as co-chairman of Bumi plc, a natural resources group.

  • From 1996 to 2009, he co-chaired the hedge fund Atticus Capital 

  • He was chairman of Vivarte, a major pan-European retailer owning brands like Kookai.

  • Between 2010 and 2013, he sat on the board of Barrick Gold Corporation, one of the world’s largest gold mining companies.

  • From 2015 onward, he joined Volex plc and eventually became its Executive Chairman. Through NR Holdings Ltd, he remains the largest shareholder of the company.

  • Title and Citizenship

    Following the death of his father, Jacob Rothschild, on 26 February 2024, Nathaniel inherited the title as 5th Baron Rothschild and the baronetcy associated with it. In addition to his British heritage, he holds Montenegrin citizenship following naturalisation nathanielrothschild.org.

    Recent Business Developments

    • In mid-2024, Rothschild took on the role of executive chairman and minority stakeholder at Tennor, an investment firm led by financier Lars Windhorst Financial Times.

    • However, by early 2025 he filed a lawsuit against Lars Windhorst and Tennor International over an alleged debt default related to a short-term credit facility he extended to Windhorst personally.
